If you are reading this article, I believe you have some knowledge of garment transfers. You may think that most garment transfers are the same. But in fact, dark fabrics have more stringent requirements for the type of transfer paper. Next, I will give you a detailed description of the transfer paper for dark fabrics, the transfer method, and the details to pay attention to when transferring. This knowledge will help you better utilize dark T-shirt transfer paper to unleash your creativity.
What is Dark Fabric Transfer Paper?
Many people who are new to apparel transfer see “dark” as their first reaction to black. However, in fact, “dark” here includes all dark colors. We typically use dark T-shirt transfer paper, DTF film, or HTV to transfer these dark fabrics.
●Dark T-shirt Transfer Paper
Dark T-shirt transfer paper is divided into two parts, base paper, and PP film. When classified by printer type, transfer paper is divided into inkjet type and laser type. When classified by transfer technology processing, it is divided into the cut type and hollow type.
All the T-shirt transfer paper is available for the cotton fabric. Only the dark T-shirt transfer paper is available for the dark cotton fabric. As a result, dark T-shirt transfer paper is one of the choices for the transfer of dark cotton fabric.
●Dark T-shirt Transfer Paper DTF Transfer Film
DTF transfer film is a kind of brand-new transfer paper which can transfer clothes through DTF powder. To transfer the clothes, you need to prepare DTF film, DTF ink, DTF powder, a modified printer, an oven/powder shaker, and a heat press.
DTF can transfer almost all the fabrics without the limitation of the basic color of the fabric. This is owing to its white base ink. Its effect of transferring can be more vibrant than the other kinds of transfer paper. In addition, it has excellent color fastness and can be washed as soon as the fabric has been transferred.
●HTV/Heat Transfer Vinyl
Heat Transfer Vinyl, or HTV for short, is a special vinyl polymer that can be used on certain fabrics and materials to create designs and promotional products. Heat transfer vinyl is one of the most common techniques used to customize fabric products.
It comes in a roll or sheet form with an adhesive backing so it can be cut, peeled off, and placed on a substrate for heat application. It can transfer dark t-shirts. As a result, it can also be referred to as dark fabric transfer paper.
●Why Can Sublimation Paper Not Transfer Dark Fabric?
Sublimation paper is very popular in the market of transferring for a few years. But, we don’t use it to transfer dark fabric. Next, I will show you the reason why sublimation paper cannot transfer dark fabric.
As we all know, the effect of transferring can be influenced by the basic color of the fabric. If we use sublimation paper to transfer dark fabric, the dark color will cover the pattern transferred to the fabric. Therefore, it is difficult for us to see the original pattern. This means you cannot unleash your creativity by transferring the dark fabric through sublimation paper. To transfer dark fabric, we suggest you use dark T-shirt transfer paper, DTF transfer film, HTV, and so on.
Before introducing the operation of transferring dark fabric through dark T-shirt transfer paper, I would like to show you why I choose dark T-shirt transfer paper as an example.
T-shirt transfer paper has low standards for the machines you used in the transferring. Even if you only have a printer and an iron, you can use the T-shirt transfer paper to transfer clothes. As a result, for most manufacturers, T-shirt transfer paper is the easiest transfer paper to work with.
How to Transfer Dark Fabric through Dark T-shirt Transfer Paper?
First of all, we need to prepare the dark T-shirt transfer paper, a dark blank and 100% cotton T-shirt, an inkjet printer, and a heat press/an iron.
Secondly, we can print the image with T-shirt transfer paper through the inkjet printer. There is no need to print the image mirrored.
After printing the image, cut the white margins off so that just the image remains.
Next, remove the backing paper and place the transfer paper on the shirt so that the image faces you, cover the image with enclosed overlay paper. Set the temperature to 165℃(330℉) and press for around 25 seconds.
Finally, let the paper cool completely and remove the overlaying paper to complete the transfer. By the way, if any part of the image starts to lift off, simply reheat/re-iron those spots with overlay paper. If not, no need to reheat/re-iron.
What Should Be Paid Attention to In the Process of Using T-shirt Transfer Paper?
Although we introduce the operation of using dark T-shirt transfer paper, there are still some important tips that need to pay attention to. Let me show you below.
●Whether Mirrored Printing is Required?
It depends on the type of T-shirt transfer paper. Different from dark T-shirt transfer paper, white T-shirt transfer paper needs to be printed with a mirror image setting. Therefore, the paper printed should face the T-shirt. Then the transferred pattern can be the right side when transferring.
●Percentage of Polyester Fiber
We usually use 100% cotton blank T-shirts to transfer. In fact, you can use T-shirt transfer paper to transfer T-shirts that are made of less than 30% polyester. On the other hand, sublimation paper needs to use T-shirts that are made of more than 30% polyester.
